The efforts are paying off, with mobile analytics firm OpenSignal recognizing Smart for having the country’s fastest LTE network – 12.5MBps in the November 2017 to January 2018 period, versus its rival’s 7.69 MBps. Smart’s network transformation took a big chunk of parent company PLDT’s ramped-up capital expenditure program of P40 billion for 2017. This entailed re-allocating more frequencies to 3G and LTE, integrating Smart and subsidiary Sun’s existing networks, and re-equipping cell sites with low-frequency and high-frequency bands to improve both coverage and capacity, in order to meet the increasing mobile data demands of Filipinos.
